![]() Language services can be implemented either in native code or managed code. The implementations can reuse code from the parser or the compiler for the language. Language services are implemented on a per-language basis. If the interface is implemented, the functionality will be available for the language. Functionalities that can be added this way include syntax coloring, statement completion, brace matching, parameter information tooltips, member lists, and error markers for background compilation. A language service defines various interfaces which the VSPackage implementation can implement to add support for various functionalities. Support for programming languages is added by using a specific VSPackage called a Language Service. The services can then be consumed for creation of other packages, which add functionality to the Visual Studio IDE. However, MPF does not provide all the functionality exposed by the Visual Studio COM interfaces. The Visual Studio SDK also includes the Managed Package Framework ( MPF), which is a set of managed wrappers around the COM-interfaces that allow the Packages to be written in any CLI compliant language. Visual Studio uses COM to access the VSPackages. All editors, designers, project types and other tools are implemented as VSPackages. In addition, the IDE is also responsible for coordinating and enabling communication between services. The IDE provides three services: SVsSolution, which provides the ability to enumerate projects and solutions SVsUIShell, which provides windowing and UI functionality (including tabs, toolbars, and tool windows) and SVsShell, which deals with registration of VSPackages. When installed, the functionality is available as a Service. Visual Studio does not support any programming language, solution or tool intrinsically instead, it allows the plugging of functionality coded as a VSPackage. Visual Studio 2013, 20 are on Extended Support, while 2019 is on Mainstream Support. The slogan for Visual Studio Community edition is "Free, fully-featured IDE for students, open-source and individual developers".Īs of January 10, 2023, Visual Studio 2022 is a current production-ready version. The most basic edition of Visual Studio, the Community edition, is available free of charge. Java (and J#) were supported in the past. Support for other languages such as Python, Ruby, Node.js, and M among others is available via plug-ins. NET, C#, F#, JavaScript, TypeScript, XML, XSLT, HTML, and CSS. Built-in languages include C, C++, C++/CLI, Visual Basic. Visual Studio supports 36 different programming languages and allows the code editor and debugger to support (to varying degrees) nearly any programming language, provided a language-specific service exists. ![]() It accepts plug-ins that expand the functionality at almost every level-including adding support for source control systems (like Subversion and Git) and adding new toolsets like editors and visual designers for domain-specific languages or toolsets for other aspects of the software development lifecycle (like the Azure DevOps client: Team Explorer). ![]() Other built-in tools include a code profiler, designer for building GUI applications, web designer, class designer, and database schema designer. The integrated debugger works as both a source-level debugger and as a machine-level debugger. Visual Studio includes a code editor supporting IntelliSense (the code completion component) as well as code refactoring. It can produce both native code and managed code. Visual Studio uses Microsoft software development platforms such as Windows API, Windows Forms, Windows Presentation Foundation, Windows Store and Microsoft Silverlight. It is used to develop computer programs including websites, web apps, web services and mobile apps. Visual Studio is an integrated development environment (IDE) from Microsoft. Heavy heat? Not a problem – making steak is a doddle. The fresh-out-of-the-box gold colour soon becomes black and greasy.Īfter that faff, how does it cook? The answer, in a word, is brilliantly. In short, you wipe on a thin layer of oil (flax is normally recommended, but I used rapeseed, and it seemed to work fine), whack the pan into the oven at full heat for 90 minutes, take it out, let it cool down, and then repeat. The process takes a few hours at least, though you can do other things during that time. After unboxing it, you'll have to season it with oil, which lends the pan a (natural) non-stick surface. Importantly, the webbed design where the handle meets the pan stops heat from travelling up the metal, towards your skin. It works too: not once did I need to use a tea towel, as with old-school cast iron pans – a fire hazard as well as an annoyance.īecause it's made from iron, the skillet needs an element of love and care (certainly more than a non-stick pan, which we'll get to shortly). The handle is relatively nice to hold, with a well-placed groove for your thumb. At 2kg, I didn't find it too cumbersome to lift, but neither is it one for casually tossing pancakes stirring onions was a lot easier than tossing them, for example. To hold, the pan feels immediately heavy. Yes, the initial cost is north of £100, but the Solidteknics should find its way into your will – and your children's will, and their children's will. ![]() ![]() In the 21st century, particularly at an institution such as London’s Royal College of Music, fluency across both practice and theory is the norm. Of particular interest to me, a musician working across both practice and theory primarily in the arena of historical performance, is Ong’s identification and definition of some characteristics of orally-based thought and expression. In 1982, nine years earlier, Walter Ong’s Orality and Literacy: The Technologizing of the Word explored differences between oral and literate cultures. Successful performers must be able to seamlessly function across the widest possible range of musical styles, accommodating an equally wide gamut of tastes, both individually and collectively. In the arena of Western Art music, historical performance is now an essential component of musical training and education. Since Clive Brown’s 1991 accusation that many twentieth-century manifestations of historical performance lacked an appropriate degree of musical sensitivity, the historical performance movement has truly come of age. Furthermore, it also allows an exploration of the musical intuitions that are the root cause of these speeds. ![]() By using as many sources on Beethoven’s tempo as possible, this approach makes reasonable estimations of the actual speeds that Beethoven had in mind for his works. In particular the metronome marks by Beethoven, as well as those from his close contemporaries Carl Czerny, Ignaz Moscheles, and Karl Holz, provide great insight into the composer’s sense of tempo. This thesis overcomes these limitations by incorporating all of Beethoven’s works, and rooting the whole research in a wide variety of sources from the eighteenth and nineteenth century that have a plausible relationship with Beethoven’s practice. Thirdly, discussions of Beethoven’s tempo have typically focussed on works in one particular genre. Secondly, the substantial differences between tempo preferences in the early nineteenth century and now has made these tempo indications difficult to approach for musicians in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Firstly, some of the discussion has been based on unreliable sources, or an unrepresentative sample of sources. Finally, it discusses the meaning of these metronome marks for modern performers, and how these editions give options to disentangle the author from the text.īeethoven’s tempo indications have been the subject of much scholarly debate, but a coherent understanding of his intended tempos has not yet emerged. In addition, it also discusses to what degree the editors seem to have influenced each other, which indications are most likely representative of Beethoven’s intended speeds, as well as why the metronome fell out of favour later in the nineteenth century. By presenting new evidence, including the discovery of what are most likely the metronome marks intended for the missing sonatas from the first ‘complete’ edition by Tobias Haslinger, the article presents a more complete overview of the indications in these editions, as well as their chronology. Nevertheless, the provenance and meaning of these metronome marks have remained unclear, which has led to some confusion in the literature. Previous discussions of Carl Czerny’s and Ignaz Moscheles’s metronome marks for Beethoven’s piano sonatas have highlighted the importance of these indications for our understanding of the intended performance practice of these works. Shortly after Beethoven’s death, several of his closest associates provided performance indications for editions of his works. ![]() ![]() ![]()

![]() ![]() And while I hate to be cliché, it was an absolutely transformative experience. So my goal with this past life therapy session was to solve the age-old dilemma of whether my life has meaning. Since turning 34 in February, I’ve been experiencing what psychologists call an existential crisis. Other times, they discover a happy memory, like the one I found on that frigid night in my New York City apartment. Sometimes her clients uncover painful experiences. Using various hypnosis techniques (like slow breathing and counting down), Barham acts as a meditative guide, helping her clients return to prior life spans in search of nuggets of information that can improve their present life. The stranger in question was Ann Barham, LMFT, a certified past life regression therapist and author of the 2016 book, The Past Life Perspective: Discovering Your True Nature Across Multiple Lifetimes. With my eyes covered in a furry, leopard print sleep mask, a complete stranger listened to my story while recording my deepest, innermost thoughts in order to offer insight and spiritual understanding about how my past life factors into my current one. Most clients have ‘Ahha!’ moments right then and for many days afterward as pieces of their picture begin falling into place.Chasing the meaning of that quote is what inspired me to try past life regression therapy while reclining on the queen-sized bed in my dimly-lit studio apartment one evening in March. ![]() Each life explored is a journey and an adventure. ![]() Others are drawn to certain places or countries that they immediately feel comfortable and familiar with. Life today is so busy and so ‘noisy’ that these memories are usually concealed beneath the noise of everyday thoughts. Past Life Regression (PLR) is a gentle form of hypnotherapy that takes an individual back through time to their previous lives or incarnations by accessing memories and experiences that are normally hidden in their subconscious mind. Deeply relaxed and comfortable, and fully aware of oneself and their surroundings. Likening the feeling to the "twilight" state just before sleep. It is then d uring this meditative state that suggestions are given, directed at the desired goals that you have outlined and planned with your therapist.Īfter experiencing hypnosis people have reported they were pleased to find they were awake, aware, and in control the entire time. "Trance-like" states are part of our common human experience, such as getting lost in a good book, driving down a familiar stretch of road with no conscious recollection of the journey, when in prayer or meditation, or when undertaking a monotonous or creative activity. Hypnosis can be seen as a waking state of awareness or consciousness. However, recent advances in neuroscience have enabled us to begin to understand what is happening when someone enters a hypnotic state and evidence shows that hypnosis is a useful tool to help patients and clients manage a variety of conditions. Hypnotists are also often seen as wacky magicians who put people on stage and get them to either cluck like a chicken or act out in some silly way.īut in reality, hypnotic states have been used for healing since humankind has existed, but because hypnosis has been misrepresented for entertainment purposes and has been portrayed in the media as something mysterious and magical it has been viewed with distrust and skepticism by many. In the movies, hypnosis is often portrayed as entertainment or a control tactic - to get people to commit outlandish crimes or to fall madly in love for instance. ![]() |
